We are one of the largest vinifera growers in the area, making old world selections that are suited for cooler climates. Our 50 acres of vineyards include Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Pinot Noir, as well as Merlot and Semillon, the only farmers in this area to grow them.
We plant only Old World European varieties. Though these are more difficult to grow because the vines are tender and can be damaged by cold winters, South River Vineyard is fortunate to have an ideal growing site, a site proven to be one of the warmest farms in the neighborhood. Lake Erie also plays a vital role; it's warm breeze prevents frost in the spring, helpskeep the vines warmer in winter and promotes a longer growing season.
It all starts in the vineyards. South River Vineyard's growing site and carefully chosen grape varietals have contributed to its ability to produce quality wines, year after year.
